mdworker_shared - What is this?

Bit of advice please.

Activity Monitor is showing that I have about 10,000 (OK, 37) instances of 'mdworker_shared' running and consuming a fair chunk of memory.

Can anyone please tell me what this is and if there is a way to get rid of it?

It's part of Spotlight that is involved in indexing your files. You don't "get rid of it."

It may be caused by opened windows in the browser.
