I've purchased some music, and copied some cds to my MacBook Air. When syncing my iPhone 7, only the purchased music transfers to the phone. Is this something apple has implemented or can I get around it? Thanks!

Check your selections on the music tab of the device when it is connected to iTunes. Click the device icon first.
Your purchase history will show on the device simply because you're signed into your account so you may not have anything currently set up to sync. Typically iTunes only syncs ticked tracks.
