iPhone has changed all files to HEIC

Why did all my files change to a HEIC format, they are not working on any of my computers?

Why would Apple take all of me pictures and convert them without my permission?

Further more why would I want a file format that is not supported by anybody else?

Is there a quick and simple way to convert these and keep them from using this format?

This new iPhoneX is getting worse every day.

You can set the iPhone to use JPEG instead of HEIF, see: Using HEIF or HEVC media on Apple devices - Apple Support

Though capturing in HEIF and HEVC format is recommended, you can capture media using older formats that are more broadly compatible with other operating systems and devices:

  1. In iOS 11, go to Settings > Camera.
  2. Tap Formats.
  3. Tap Most Compatible. This setting is available only on devices that can capture media in HEIF or HEVC format.
  4. All new photos and videos will now use JPEG or H.264 format. To return to using the space-saving HEIF and HEVC formats, choose High Efficiency.

and

When you import HEIF or HEVC media from an attached iOS device to Photos, Image Capture, or a PC, the media might be converted to JPEG or H.264.

You can change this import behavior in iOS 11. Go to Settings > Photos. In the "Transfer to Mac or PC" section,

Just found out the same issue when I went to download some pics from my Google Photos online. Now I've got a bunch of files in .jpeg format, a bunch in .heic format and on top of that the latest since switching will now be back to .jpeg. I have to give permission for every worthless, insignificant thing in the world on my iPhone but something like this that causes users tons of headaches and hours of work converting back to something usable is a change made by Apple (assuming in some upgrade) without so much as a whisper. Thanks, can't wait to waste time undoing this damage.
