Launch Adobe Acrobat from Safari and View PDF

Please read this post carefully before replying. I have a very specific question. Before I ask it, I am going to clarify what I am NOT asking.

  • I am not asking how to save a PDF from within Safari.
  • I am not asking how to open a PDF from a Mac.
  • I am asking how to configure a Mac so that when a link to a PDF is opened, Adobe Acrobat launches on the Mac and the PDF is displayed.

The issue at hand is that I'm trying to determine if MacOS supports the same user experience as Windows. With Windows-based browsers, Adobe Reader can be configured so that when a user clicks on a link, the browser launches Adobe Reader (outside of the browser, with the application running on the local machine) and then displays the PDF. Is this possible on MacOS?

(Again, I am not asking for instructions on how to save a PDF from within Safari. Any answer that mentions selecting 'Save' from the menu or other means by saving it locally is not correct for the question that I am asking

The user experience that I am trying to replicate is

  1. User clicks on a PDF on a web page
  2. Safari launches Adobe Reader
  3. Adobe Reader starts on the local machine
  4. The PDF is displayed in the web page

iMac, macOS High Sierra (10.13.6)
