No and no! Don't even think about it.

No Anti-Virus software or so-called “cleaning” apps are needed or recommended for Mac OS. They can conflict with Mac's own built-in security. At best they will slow your Mac by using unnecessary resources and at worst will bork your entire system. And CleanMyMac is one of the worst.

You don't need cleaning.

You need more RAM. ElCapitan and later need 6GB or more for appropriately-responsive operation.

Standard RAM: 4 GB Maximum RAM: 16 GB*

Details: 4 GB of RAM pre-installed as two 2 GB modules, no slots free.
*Originally, both the official and actual maximum RAM was 8 GB. However, as confirmed by site sponsor OWC, if running OS X 10.7.5 or higher, updated with the latest EFI, and equipped with proper specification memory modules, this model can support up to 16 GB of RAM.

Its a good thing you have a recent Time Machine backup, because you may need it soon. Run times like 15 minutes correlate with Bad blocks on a rotating Magnetic Hard drive.

When you upgrade your hard drive (which will probably need to be soon) consider installing an SSD drive. Users who do say, "its like getting a whole new computer!"

Aug 25, 2018 4:35 PM in response to franca63

On that MacBook Pro, you can run mixed sizes. you can replace a 2GB DIMM with a $GB DIMM in the US for about US$40, and 8GB DIMM for about US$80, double those if you decide to replace both. There is a small penalty for not running optimal matched pairs, but it is nothing you will notice.

If that does not quickly clear up those run times (should be more like 4 minutes, not 15 minutes) then you may need drive as well. You can get a comparable-sized SSD for under US$100, a 500GB for around US$150-ish. Less if you decide to live with a slower rotating drive.

Can I take my macbook any place that upgrades mac computers or do I take it to an apple store? I believe I asked one of the techs at an apple store before and they said it's better to just get a new laptop not really worth spending the money to just upgrade my harddrive since my macbook is 8 years old.

The SSD is that something thats gets installed inside my mac or is an SSD card that goes in one of the ports on the outside of the laptop?

Thanks for the information. The SSD is that something thats gets installed inside my mac or is an SSD card that goes in one of the ports on the outside of the laptop?

I have started to delete some stuff that's using up space and my memory ie files, caches etc. but it's such a long process I thought maybe there is a utilitiy that would speed up the process.

Aug 26, 2018 5:42 AM in response to franca63

The SSD is installed inside your Mac. You could run from an external SSD also but it will not be as fast as one installed internally. The RAM is user accessible.

Omni DiskSweeper is safe. DiskSweeper can give you a more accurate read of disk space than Finder or Storage Tab of About this Mac. Itcan also show you the precise size and location of all your files. It will inventory your disk starting from the files that take up the most space. If you want you can even delete files from OmniDisk Sweeper. But be careful some of the items may be important to your system.

Aug 26, 2018 5:47 AM in response to franca63

OWC/MacSales has Videos online that show you how to upgrade RAM in your Mac and another than shows how to upgrade to a new drive.

Most users find it simple enough to do them selves, but that is not the issue. Watch the Video for your Mac carefully and see if this is something you would feel comfortable enough doing yourself, or whether you would prefer to pay someone else to do it.
