Hello ewartm,

Thanks for asking the Apple Support Communities for help with AdBlock. The alert you are receiving indicates that the Safari application is still open. Quit Safari by choosing "Quit Safari" under the Safari menu, and you should be able to update AdBlock. If you are having trouble quitting Safari, you can click the Apple in the top left hand corner of the screen, and choose Force Quit. Then choose Safari, and force it to quit.

Also, are you installing or updating through the Mac App Store? Quit Safari, then you can use the App Store to install or update the App. AdBlock for Safari - Mac App Store
