Despite having a fast internet connection when I use Find My Phone via iCloud.com I get the dots but no map. I've tried on both Chrome and Safari but to no avail. All I get are squares (see attached image)

Considering the icloud website is not technically supported on iOS devices its no surprise things like this may crop up.
Any reason you are not using the Find My iPhone App on your iPhone instead of the website?

Though the iCloud website does show the lack of maps or terrain in Chrome on a Windows computer. So its very possible that the website version is having issues with the maps and terrain display.
I just tried and I am seeing the same thing. It may be a website problem.

The arrangements of dots is correct. It is just the map background that is missing.
I hope this means we will soon be seeing better maps with more detail soon 😀

Tried that. It doesn't connect at all. Just comes back with try later.
It appears to be working now.
