Apple watch SOS question

Regarding the SOS function, is it possible to just message your emergency contacts without calling emergency services? Can I turn off calling of emergency services and just notify my emergency contacts? does anyone use this watch as a medical alert system? I am thinking of getting this for my Mom. She is a 93 year old iphone/ipad junkie, but sometimes forgets to keep her phone within reach she would always have the watch on.

It does not appear to be possible to use the SOS system just to call selected contacts, and Apple Watch was not designed for this function. The best workaround would be to voice command Siri “Hey Siri, Call phoebe22” and if your mom can’t even manage this she really needs 911 help.

As the offspring of parents only slightly younger than your mom I suggest that if a senior the age of our parents needs to make an emergency call for a medical alert they do really need to include 911-level assistance. First Responders would rather have an early alert which turns out to be no action required, rather than lose valuable minutes while family turn up and assess a life threatening problem.
