Black screen at startup

After I hit the power button on my Macbook Pro it begins to boot up normally: the white background with the apple in the center and the progress bar underneath. Once it gets to about two-thirds or three-quarters full the screen goes black for a couple seconds and then the login screen comes up. This has been happening at least since the latest High Sierra update, but now it occasionally gets stuck on that black screen and doesn't ever finish booting up. I need to hard restart and try again. Any idea what is causing this?

MacBook Pro, macOS High Sierra (10.13.6), 850EVO SSD, 8 gigs RAM

After the power-on self-test is complete, your Mac sends a video signal to your built-in and connected displays. The display screen might appear black or gray at this point in the startup sequence, and the display's backlight should turn on.

If an image doesn't appear on your screen after a few moments, try turning up your display's brightness. If you're using an external display, make sure it's connected properly and turned on.

See some of these resolves, seems you are not fully booted.

See if you can

Boot into Recovery (Command R) and from the dropdown menu: Utilities> Disk Utility> run the First Aid on your Macintosh HD. If errors are found and repaired, run again until no errors reported.
