bootcamp error cannot locate partition

I am trying to create a 40Gb Windows 10 partition on my new iMac using bootcamp assistant. MacintoshHD is partitioned OK and I've download a Windows.iso file from Microsoft to an 8Gb MacOS formatted USB drive. The install process Windows install process begins but quits with the following message

'Windows cannot locate the disk and partition specified in the unattend answer files <ImageInstall> setting. Make sure the setting references a valid partition and restart the installation.'

iMac (Retina 4K, 21.5-inch, 2017), macOS High Sierra (10.13.6), Intel i7, 8Gb memory

If you have a new iMac, there should be no need for a USB installer which may be

causing installer confusion.

With OS X El Capitan 10.11 or later, these models use the internal drive to temporarily store what you need to install Windows, so you don't need a USB flash drive:

  • MacBook Pro (2015 and later)
  • MacBook Air (2015 and later)
  • MacBook (2015 and later)
  • iMac (2015 and later)
  • iMac Pro
  • Mac Pro (Late 2013)

Alternatively you could try unplug the USB Stick hold the Windows 10 ISO image.

It is possible that this has been the issue that Windows/Bootcamp is confused about too many disks being attached.

Mac reboot holding the option key. This opens up an Disk Manager where you can select Windows/Bootcamp

Mac now continues to reboot back to the Windows installation process.
