Two SSDs in Mini 2012

I have a Mac Mini late 2012 with a Fusion drive.

I think that the harddisk is getting too hot and I want to replace it.

The files on the fusion drive are no more than 300 GB.

I also possess a SSD of 500 GB.

My question is:

1) can I replace the harddisk with the SSD?

2) what would you recommend: making the two SSDs into a Fusion drive or making them separate disks?

Mac mini, macOS High Sierra (10.13.6), 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7; 16GB Memory

The design concept of using a Fusion drive is to take advantage of the "speed" of an SSD and the "storage capacity" of a HDD. You cannot create a Fusion drive with two SSDs nor two HDDs.

You should be able to replace your existing HDD with an SSD, but they will need to be treated as separate drives.
