Apple Watch for medical reasons only
I am looking into to buying an iWatch for my sick family member to check and track the heart rate and blood pressure.
I am wondering, if an iPhone is necessary to do this?

An iPhone is essential to setup and use Apple Watch. Please be aware that there is no blood pressure measuring function, and heart rate monitoring is generally adequate for exercise and activity tracking but may not be to clinical standards. In particular heart rate is not a continuous measurement during normal wear, it is sampled at intervals roughly every few minutes. Apple Support document Your heart rate. I suggest you discuss your ideas with the potential wearer’s doctors, because they may reject results from a non-approved source, and they will probably be able to suggest a more appropriate device for clinical monitoring if they think it is necessary.
