Can I set Fcn keys on a non-apple keyboard?

We had to replace our iMac keyboard, went with a non-mac keyb (iHome). It is adequate. However, the function key functions are missing, and thus we are missing Mac keyb features like volume and brightness controls. Is there an Apple way to assign function preferences to Fcn keys? I have opened preferences and placed these fcn's in the top menu bar. That works, but adds a couple of (minor) steps.

I have not yet researched this deeply.

Thanks, GB

Hi GB,

For an Apple keyboard, the control for the F keys is in System Preferences > Keyboard.

This is the panel as it appears on an MBPro running El Cap. The checkbox and description are circled in red.

As your third party keyboard may not have an fn key, the option may not be available in the preferences screen you see.

Check Keyboard Viewer, which may show a key which acts the same as the fn key, even though it has a different label. On my MBP, the visual differences affect the display in the viewer of the delete (backspace), return (enter) and left and right arrow keys.

This is not a Pages for Mac question.

However when you attached the keyboard the macOS should have asked you to tap certain keys to identify the keyboard layout and should from that been able to work out what was whar.

My suspicion is that you simply do not have the fn keys set in System Preferences > Keyboard. They work in two ways as the shortcuts to volume brightness etc or as the numbered keys used for Styles. If it is the later you need to hold down the fn key to get them to do the default keyboard shortcuts for volume, brightness etc.

Test either way.
