Hi,
Whilst the Speak text feature can be really useful, its not user friendly when reading large amounts of text. You can start and stop, but you can't pause and then resume (that I can see). Is there any app, that would put Speak Text controls in the menu bar (play, pause, stop, rewind and fast forward)?

Thanks dialabrian, after plenty of searching I found - Dictater, that is free works well but not possible to regulate text speech speed. The other is GhostReader Plus, slightly more polished ($40), should be able to regulate text speech speed, but didn't function for me. Have contacted the developer, awaiting his/her response.
FWIW, TextEdit can convert any text to an audio file that can be played back in iTunes.

I didn't think of the speech speed originally, because I was hoping there was an app that would add controls to the built in function, and that already has the ability to vary speed. These apps are separate text to speech apps.
You're welcome. Well you didn't mention changing the speed as a criteria. There are plenty of apps that can take a sound file and do that. Good luck with your search.
Forgot to add, that means you can use the keyboard media keys.
