You don't lose anything. When a file is saved, it is stored in your drive, in the location of your choosing.

Be mindful of where you save your files. The mac does have an accessible, hierarchical file system, unlike the iPhone. You should use it. Make folders according to your own workflow. There is a Documents folder, a Pictures folder, and so, on, and you can create as many folders as make sense to you. Keep things organized.

Also, there is a great feature called Spotlight. Have a file called "bazinga" but don't know where it is? Command-space to open Spotlight, and start typing the name.

Thank you. I understand the file system. I have been using Mac computers since the 1980's. Suddenly-- for no apparent reason to me---when I save a file to a specific folder, it is not there listed in Finder. If I go to the app I created the file in, it is listed as recent file and I can open and amend. Days later-- the file is not in the folder where I saved it. I have save my tax Excel file in about 6 different places (including desktop) to see if it would show up on one of those places on Finder. I can find it in the RECENTS file of Finder-- but it does not say what file it is in. I depend on the file system to organize and retrieve specific documents. How long will it stay in RECENTS? I have never had this problem before. I don't understand why I can't see a file I saved to a specific folder in Finder.
