total newbie!

Hello everyone! Such a helpful and friendly group here! (just want I am needing!) As you can see, I am totally new to the Macintosh environment, always wanted a Mac, couldn't afford one, so I finally got a refurb. coming soon! Before I receive it though, I'd like to know if I can use any keyboard and mosue with it. It is a G3 400 mhz. all-in-one....(the blue and white model). I have old IBM compatible keyboards (wireless, usb, and bus.) bus mice as well. I hate to spend any extra money on another keyboard and mouse if it's not needed. Thanks so much in advance for any help!

The model we refer to as the Blue & White G3 is a swoopy-looking tower with an optional display. Those take either the older beige ADB keyboard or a USB keyboard.

If it is blue and All-In-One with CRT, it is probably an iMac G3 400 CRT model. Those take only USB keyboards and mice. You can get by with an IBM keyboard, but some key-combos used for debugging will not work properly, and when it says Apple/Command key you will press the Windoze key.

This forum is for Hardware Older than the G3. iMac CRT support page is here, and has a link to the discussions for those models:

Krissy, welcome to Apple Discussions & the Mac Community. There are differences on a few keys. I have a USB PC scroll wheel mouse that I use on my G3 Pismo laptop running Tiger. The mouse works fine. However, if I plug it into my G4 running OS 9.2.2, the scroll wheel doesn't work, but the roller ball & clicker work fine.

Here's some links about using a PC keyboard on a Mac.

You will probably be more pleased with a Mac kbd & mouse. You can get used ones quite cheap by joining LEM-Swap for buying & selling Mac stuff. http://groups.google.com/group/lemswap
After you join, post a WTB (want to buy) & you'll probably get multiple offers.

WOW! Two answers-and so quick and helpful! Thanks for all the great links...esp. the link to the used keyboards and mice. Bless you kindhearted Macfolk, I am sure I will be back!
