How to set to auto open docs & how to disable hyper link menu

Hi all,

two questions if I may

#1 Is there a way to configure Pages to automatically open documents that were open at the time of the previous shut down?

This happens automatically in Numbers

#2 Is there a way to set up the hyperlinks in Pages’09 v7.1 to perform in the same way as they do in v4.3.

To clarify, in v4.3 if I activate a hyperlink it takes me directly to the intended destination.

In v7.1 if I activate a hyperlink it takes me to a menu. I’d like to disable that feature and set it to go directly to the target destination.

It may be key to know that I am currently running v4.3 as my default option.

Some time back when Pages was overhauled it lost, what was for me, some key functionality that I couldn’t live without.

As a result I decided to stay with v4.3 until the situation improved, while maintaining a separate up to date but unused latest version.

As a result I currently have an up to date Pages’09 v7.1 on my Mac but I use Pages’09 v4.3 as my every day app

Thanks

Regarding question 1:

I have only Lion and only Pages '09. The following describes how this feature works on my system. Maybe some of this will help you.

QUIT AND KEEP WINDOWS

Method 1:

Click System Preferences > General. Deselect “Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps”.

To override this in Pages, hold down the Option key in the Pages menu; “Quit Pages” changes to “Quit and Keep Windows”. When you open Pages again, this command will open the Pages files that you had open when you last closed Pages (you have to leave the files open when you close Pages).

Method 2:

Click System Preferences > General. Select “Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps”.

To override this in Pages, hold down the Option key in the Pages menu; “Quit Pages” changes to “Quit and Close All Windows”. When you open Pages again, this command won’t open the Pages files you had open when you last closed Pages (you have to leave the documents open when you close Pages).

In any case if you hold down the Shift key (for Safe Mode) when clicking the Pages icon in the Dock or in Finder, the Pages files won’t open.

Good eye!

That option is also available in Pages 5, and may have been carried forward to versions 6 and 7.

"Close windows when quitting an app" was unchecked

Just checked, and my results match yours. Pages '09 (Pages v4.3) does not recognize that System Preferences setting when opened from the Dock (and presumably, when opening by double-clicking its icon in Finder>Applications.

You can make Pages '09 open a specific document or collection of documents by selecting the document(s), right clicking on one of the selected docs, choosing Open With…, then selecting Pages 4.3 from the menu that appears.

You might also be able to set Pages 4.3 as the default application to open ALL files with the ,pages extension, but two issues are likely to show up:

  • Any Pages doc produced by, or saved using, a later version will present the "the index.xml file is missing" error message on trying to open it with Pages '09
  • The setting is not stable. The default will likely revert to the current version of pages if you use Pages 7 to open a file, or if a new file is created and saved from Pages 7.

Many thanks for this, its a feature that I wasn’t aware of, much appreciated.

Despite some subtle differences that works for me, however its not the answer I was hoping for.

Pages is one of the apps that I never shut down.

In other words I shut the computer down using “Apple > Shut Down”

that way when I start up all the apps except Pages open where I left them.

Unfortunately your suggestion doesn’t fix that but I appreciate the thought
