High Sierra iMessage talk.google.com issue

All of a sudden, on one of my two macs, iMessage keeps asking for my talk.google.com password. I have entered my google login credentials, but that doesn't work. My gmail in Mail.app works fine.

Hi,

Messages in High Sierra does not use the System Preferences > Internet Accounts > Google for Messages.

It needs a separate New Account set up in Other Account and then choosing Messages and entering your Jabber (in this case Google ) ID.

When doing so the server name should be google.com as Google don't seem to be using the talk.google.com one any more.

To be precise, Google Mail and using a Google ID for Messages needs two Accounts in System Preference > Internet Accounts.

There is no option to enable Messages in the Internet Accounts > Google pane.

You should be able to change the server name in Messages if the Account is set up in Internet Account as a Messages account.

Hi,

So if you go to System Preferences > Internet accounts you have both a Google Account that is at least doing the Mail option and Messages Account that is using the Google ID ?

In Messages then the Preferences then Accounts can you select the Google Account ?

Once that is done can you select the right hand tab for Server Settings?

If you can access this part of the settings can you change the Server to google.com and use port 5223 and SSL

Once that is done you should be able to access the Account tab and put a tick in "Enable this Account" Box.

Please Note these are High Sierra Pics. (macOS 10.13.x)

Things are different in Sierra (macOS 10.12.x) when the Google account has to be added in Messages First then activated for (Google) Mail in System Preferences > Internet Accounts.

Hi,

Yes, Google don't support SSL any more. They have not done this for some time.

It used to be that you had to turn Off SSL and also visit the Google Site and in your Account Settings > Security and Privacy set "Allow Non Secure Apps"

This is a phrase Google use that do not login with Google Oauth tokens which they claim are more secure than SSL.

I have not changed my setting an occasionally get reminders from Google.

However I believe that Messages now supports the Google security tokens.

Hi,

Yes this is the same stage I am at having just bought a 27" iMac about 2 weeks ago.

This is different to early version of OS 10.13.x (I am on 10.13.6 on this computer) compared to the last time I added a Jabber/Google Account in Sierra.

I have tried several different ways:-

Turning Off the Auto find port and server.

Turning Off SSL

Adding the account whilst Messages was closed.

If I try adding a new Account in Messages it does not give the option to add a Jabber account per se.

However this just adds another Messages account to System Preferences > Internet accounts and lists it nowhere else and gives no opportunity to specify the google.com server (as opposed to gmail.com or googlemail.com).

If you use the Add Jabber account from the Messages app Menu in the Menu Bar you get the same window that you do when you use the Plus icon in the Accounts Preferences pane.

I am not sure what to suggest next.
