SRT subtitles on iTunes/VLC

I am using AppleTV to stream videos from my iMac over the home network.

The videos on my computer are mp4 encoded and have .srt subtitle files in the same folder as video. (sometimes they are also embedded into the mp4 file).

I couldn't find any way to display subtitles for my videos. (they are displayed correctly on VLC on my mac, but can't find how to display them using VLC remote playback or iTunes).

Does anyone know how can this be achieved ?

Thanks.

You couldn’t get it to work. That’s different.

Subler doesn’t convert movie files. It muxes video/audio/subtitle/cc streams and allows to set meta data.

It works fine with iTunes-Home Sharing. If no subtitle shows, swipe down to reveal the subtitle menu.

VLC on tvOS works as well, either with external or embedded subtitles, both over SMB and Remote Playback. To activate subtitles, pause and swipe down to reveal Track Selection. There you can select the subtitles.
