Macbook Retina (early 2015) 12 inch battery life

I have owned this laptop since January 2016 and the battery has done 340 cycles in about 2.5 years. The battery originally lasted at least 9 hrs, hardly drained in sleep mode. You could pick up the laptop after 10 days with the same battery percentage as when you left it, excellent of course.

How different is it now after 340 cycles, I get 1.5 hour if I'm lucky, and it sometimes shuts down on me with 10% left. A full charge is now 53% of its original capacity (from system report), replacement cost £199 and DIY is tricky with this model. My MacBook Air from 2012 does a much better job after 850 cycles!

Has anyone else got this problem? Would Apple help me free of charge with such a detoriated battery after 340 cycles whilst they say it should last 1000 cycles?

Make an appointment at the Apple Genius Bar for service. If you need to find an Apple Store - Find a Store - Apple. If you did not purchase it from Apple then you will need to look to the vendor for service or How to find your nearest Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) or Distributor (AAD).

My early 2016 Macbook threw a service battery warning at 161 cycle counts, 17 months age. Genius Bar told me my only option was a full cost battery replacement. I have spent thousands of dollars on Apple products over the last 5 years, but no more for me.

A new battery could require replacement at less than one year or more depending upon the usage, not the age. This assumes the battery and other equipment are in good condition. Furthermore, Apple does not make the batteries.

I have been using Apple for the best part of 12 years and 340 cycles isn’t a lot. Other than that Apple is responsible for all components in my view wether they manufacture the battery or not. My Air after 900 cycles is doing much better so this is where I base my experience on incl nowadays battery’s in windows 10 laptops. I had hoped for a 50% contribution from Apple towards replacement.

Always disappointing to be told at the Apple store it’s tough luck that you’re battery lost half of its capacity after 2.5 year and a new one costs £200. Didn’t expect poor quality from Apple, would understand if my laptop was 5 year old and it got to this point.
