Songs Skip like a Scratched CD

I have been having an issue for over a month where I’m listening to music on Apple Music and the songs skip the way a scratched CD would. I have tried force quitting the app, restarting my iPhone, logging off and logging back in and it has made no difference. It’s getting frustrating when I’m using the phone to play music while I’m entertaining.

Hi vthebookworm,

If the skipping is only occurring when listening to Apple Music in the Music app, I would like to have you delete the Music app next. This would remove any related user data and configuration files (including Apple Music downloaded or synced to the iPhone). Once you have reinstalled the Music app from the App Store, the music can be synced back to your iPhone by turning iCloud Music Library on from Settings > Music.

If you're experiencing skipping audio in multiple apps, or there's no change after deleting and reinstalling the app, the next step would be to reinstall the iOS software on your iPhone. It's a good idea to make a backup of your data first:

While the following resource is for help if you can't update or restore your iPhone, follow these steps to update your iPhone in recovery mode using iTunes. This will attempt to replace the iOS software with a new copy without erasing any data from your device:

If the behavior continues to occur then I would suggest contacting Apple Support here:

Hi vthebookworm,

Thanks for getting back to us after trying those steps. We'd like to collect a bit more information to help determine how best to proceed from here:

  1. Does this happen with specific song, playlists, artists, or albums?
  2. Is the iPhone connected to headphones or a speaker when the behavior occurs?
  3. Do you have any other devices that you listen to Apple Music on? If so, does the same issue happen?
Take care!

Hello vthebookworm,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities! I understand that you're encountering playback issues listening to Apple Music on your iPhone. It's important that you're able to listen to music without interruption and you've come to the right place for a resolution.

To help us isolate possible causes, I would like to start by having you download a playlist or album to listen to offline:

Add and download music, shows, and movies from the Apple Music catalog - Apple Support

Specifically, follow the steps in this section:

How to download content to listen to offline

Before you can download content to listen to offline, you need to add it to your Library. Then, in the Music app on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch; in iTunes on your Mac or PC; or in the Apple Music app on your Android phone, find the item that you want to download, and follow these steps:

  • On your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Android phone: Tap Download User uploaded file .
  • On your Mac or PC: Click Download User uploaded file .

You'll see User uploaded file when the download is complete.

If you have Automatic Downloads turned on, content automatically downloads to your device or computer when you add it to your Library. You won't see User uploaded file or User uploaded file .

If you're able to listen to your downloaded music without interruption, try streaming music using a different Wi-Fi connection. If listening to Apple Music over cellular data, go to Settings > Music > Cellular Data and test if the behavior occurs with High Quality Streaming turned off. Keep us posted with what happens from here.

Cheers!
