How to add an audio process effect to multiple audio regions at once?

I'm recording audiobooks that have a lot of internal dialogue passages. I'd like to give just those passages a slightly different sound by adding some reverb, or maybe a spatial expander.

In Garageband, is it possible to select multiple audio regions in a file, and then apply a preset of an audio process effect (such as reverb or expander) to all of the selected audio regions at once?

Thanks!

no, not without using complicated effect automation.

a far better approach would be to use multiple tracks (you have up to 255 audio tracks on which to work) and applying your various presets to different tracks

e.g.

track 1 is the narrator, clean no effects, fairly loud, etc

track 2 is the boy trapped in a well, it has the highs rolled off and a deep reverb, and mild echo added

track 3 is the little girl and her dog that finds the boy, she has no reverb or echo, but she's kind of quiet

etc...

So I'll have to go in and mark the audio by creating audio regions in the single track for each of those sections that are italics in the text. I can process each one at a time, but a batch process would be a lot faster.

Unless.... Is there a way to batch CUT all the regions to a second track?

no, there would be no way for GB to determine where you would want to cut split a region, you'd have to choose the spots by hand.

it's not difficult, though it would take some time (editing single track recordings into multiple tracks is something we've done a lot of in our studios with GB).

⌘-t splits the region in two, so using your example...

Rivv, Daze and Winn all net at once, <⌘-t> Yes, we’re here!<⌘-t>

They all exchange looks of wonder. Not a word was said out loud, but they can communicate.

Fab nets to them all, <⌘-t>Okay, it looks like we have a good network. Aycee will load the rest of the standard routines, and then we’ll break for lunch. After that, we’d like you to rest at the apartment while we load the training simulations. You can go swimming too if you like.<⌘-t>

Winn nets, <⌘-t>Simulations? What are those?<⌘-t>...

then you'd create the second track, if you were just using two sets of effects, and drag the split-off regions to the second track

Hi HangTime,

Thank you for giving this some thought. The text will be recorded all on one track because all of the text is spoken by a single narrator, and has to work in both print and audiobook format. Here's an excerpt from a science fiction novel. (They've just been equipped with a device in their heads that let them 'net' to each other. It's like telepathy, except it's technology-assisted.) I want the narrator to just read the material in italics like the rest of the text, then I want to come back after and edit the audio file by adding the audio effect to just those sections that are in italics in the text. That means it's all one track, with these regions sprinkled throughout.

Winn nets, Simulations? What are those?

Fab nets, Simulations of the games — mostly about riding the jetbikes and avoiding collisions. Sort of a virtual practice so you learn how not to fall off.

Mod nets, Will there be any real practice?

Fab enters the room and says out loud, “They want you to experience the ride for the first time in the games.”

Posh follows. “Your emotional reactions to getting on the jetbikes for the first time are part of the fun for the audience. They get to experience it too. So, no real practice.”

So I'll have to go in and mark the audio by creating audio regions in the single track for each of those sections that are italics in the text. I can process each one at a time, but a batch process would be a lot faster.
