iMac is suddenly really slow

Hi,

Lately (for the last week maybe) my 6-year-old iMac has been running pretty slow, which it wasn't doing before (it's an old model, for sure, but it was running pretty well, and now all of a sudden it stops, shows the colored ball, and takes a lot of time to open).

The only two things that I can think might've affected the performance are:

1. Recently I tried to install a program and without realizing I opened one of those fake "installers" and said yes to installing some other program I wasn't intending to download, however, I closed the installer as soon as I realized and have now run Malwarebytes, which detected no problem in my Mac.

2. I recently moved to a big city, and took the iMac in my car in its original box. I worry it might've suffered a hit or something which could've hurt the hardware, who knows.

Anyway, this is my EtreCheck report (the only problems I can see are orphan files and then one of the unsigned files, which says is possibly adware, but from the name seems to be the updater for the MEGAsync app, which I've been using without issue for some time now, however, the install date is from TODAY, which makes even less sense because my mac has been running really slowly for about a week now):

I was referring to all my personal files from the internal drive which I dont wanna lose. So, from Recovery Mode, is there a way to install this new “Combo” version of OS X instead of just installing it normally? And can I be sure my personal files will not be erased in the process? Also it seems weird that just installing an actualization of OS X my broken hard drive will revive itself, but it’s not like I would know, so I guess you’re right.

Already done it, they were correctly deleted, the Mac however is still running slow. I’m now almost convinced it’s an issue of the internal hard drive, currently can boot it anymore so I’m stuck in Recovery Mode, trying to get an external hard drive so I can copy the files from the internal one and then erase so I can reinstall OS X on it. Hopefully it’ll work

Did you run another Etrecheck to be sure there were no more of those files left on your Mac?

If that so, then startup in Safe Mode and see if your Mac works as expected there. Safe Mode will take longer to load because it runs system checks and some cache cleaning before the login screen.

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support

MichaelPM is correct about Chrome being a resource hog but if it just got slower then Chrome probably isn't the only culprit.

No, why would you want the files back you deleted? If it won't boot into Safe Mode there may be a problem with corruption in the OS. Instead of reinstalling, you can run the 10.13.6 Combo Update to overwrite any system software that may be corrupt.

Download macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 Combo Update

The Combo Update is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update, so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before. It should preserve all your data and settings but that said you should always have a backup.
