iMovie project cannot be found

I experienced a crash of iMovie 10.0.5 and after that crash I could not locate the project I was working on. The timeline has disappeared. My other projects and timelines are present and have not changed. The events associated with the projects, photos and audio clips are present but I can't access the project. Thanks for your help.

iMovie 10 automatically saves your work after each editing operation has been completed. The project is updated and saved in the the Projects browser screen. I believe that it is simultaneously updated at that time in the iMovie Backups folder. So you don't need to do anything.

Crashes are pretty unpredictable and can be caused by a number of things. Insufficient memory can cause it. 15GB is pretty tight. As you create movies you will eat into that until you get to a point where there is insufficient memory for iMovie to operate. If you can bump your free memory to at least 25GB, that would be safer.

Hi,

Sometimes after a crash preferences get disrupted. Try opening iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys and selecting to delete preferences in the box that appears. iMovie will open in a new library. Reopen your old library to get back to your projects. See if that solves it.

If the above didn't work, you probably can retrieve your project from the iMovie backups folder. To get there, go to the Finder menu on your desktop. Click on Go/Home/Library/Containers/com.apple.iMovieApp/Data/Library/Caches/iMovie Backups. When you get there you will see a list of previous library backups. Click on one dated just before the crash occurred. iMovie will open in that library and you should be able find your project that disappeared.

Hi Rich,

Wow! Thank you so much! My library folder was hidden but I clicked option when I opened Home and found it. The path was perfect and I was able to open the latest versions.

Two additional questions:

1. Is there a way to "save" the work on iMovie so if it crashes again, all is not lost? I know the current versions of iMovie are different from the old versions where you could save the work done.

2. Are crashes preventable? My research online shows that many crashes with iMovie occur during addition of audio tracks which is what happened to me. Is this a memory issue? I don't have a lot of memory on my hard drive and currently have around 15 GB.

Thanks again. Very helpful!
