Once you've had two-factor authentication for more than two weeks, you cannot turn it off.

Can I turn off two-factor authentication after I’ve turned it on?

If you already use two-factor authentication, you can no longer turn it off. Certain features in the latest versions of iOS and macOS require this extra level of security, which is designed to protect your information. If you recently updated your account, however, you can unenroll for a period of two weeks. Just open your enrollment confirmation email and click the link to return to your previous security settings. Keep in mind, this makes your account less secure and means that you can't use features that require a higher level of security.

SAME re: the calendar invite. First off, my new iPhone immediately told me "someone" was trying to log into my device in New Jersey. I was in Washington, D.C. -- it was clear this was simply some sort of jacked up error as I was the one trying to log in. It then told me to use 2F auth and sign in using my computer, so I bagged the operation until I got home to my computer. Now that I am home and have my other devices, the 2F auth messages pop up and a code keeps popping up on BOTH my phone and my laptop, but there's NOWHERE TO ENTER THE CODE!!!!!!!! When I hit "okay" in the box where the code is, the entire box disappears and nothing comes up in which to enter it... anywhere. I'm afraid, if I keep trying, I'll get locked out of my devices.

When a device requests a code, a six box display does indeed come up to enter the code. That only appears on the device requesting the code. Other trusted devices will display the code, but it can only be entered on the device requesting the code.

On older hardware, the pop up will not display as it’s not supported on older hardware. In that case, you append the six digit code directly to the end of your AppleID password.

It all works just fine in my experience.

Two two-factor authentication is just one thing about the Mac OS software of late that is completely-unbelievably time consuming and needlessly tedious. As a matter of fact, all Mac software across all devices is disappointing at the least. Has anyone else noticed how IMPOSSIBLE it is to get a QUICK ANSWER to questions you shouldn't HAVE TO ASK in the first place when Using MAC OS HELP IN FINDER. (how do i get apple iTunes playlists to play the songs in the order in which I edited them) You have to ask yourself if Apple spent as much time designing their inefficient software as it took to use it? It's as if Monkeys deigned it.. Why did I buy a ticket to this circus show again? Oh wait, it was once good!

My daily experience with my idevices.

Ugh! F'n Really! Dammit! Oh, For F' sake, it took 6 steps and 10 open windows to get there without a shortcut! UNBELIEVABLE! WTF! there isn't an option to create a shortcut for that. Uhg! I give up!

I completely agree. Two factor authentication is HORRIBLE!!!

I don't travel with my phone and my laptop, when I go out on saturday night I don't take my laptop with me. BUT I am locked out every once in awhile because I need two factor. I don't want it, I didn't install it.

This one thing, if I can not get rid of, is the reason I will get rid of apple iPhone and go to Android.

What specifically are you doing when you're prompted for 2FA? The only time I ever get prompted is when setting up a new device to my iCloud account, signing into Manage My Apple ID or iCloud from a computer, or signing into this site (if I haven't signed in from the device in several days).

Never have I been prompted for 2FA on my iPhone when I'm just out doing my normal routine, so I'm curious what you're doing that prompts this.

I've deliberately avoided turning on two factor authentication since I got my first smart phone (10r) last December but I know it is required for the upcoming iOS 13. So, I read every article I could find about it and just finished reading this entire thread! The thread is confusing because the OP talks about two factor verification but isn't it either "two STEP verification" or "two FACTOR AUTHENTICATION"? There is no such thing as "two factor verification" is there?

Can someone tell me if the call to my corded landline (as a trusted device) gives the verification code more than once? Can I play it more than once or does it just give the code once and then hang up?

My local bank puts the verification number on my computer screen (if I have to call because I can't login) and then my bank asks me to put that number I see into the phone's pad and then I am logged in. In contrast, a huge national bank I have a credit card with, until recently, would rapidly recite the code over my landline and then I was supposed to type it in on my computer's browser. It was read to me only once with NO way to replay the number. I never got it right and always had to call the bank instead. The bank got a lot of complaints and finally fixed it and now you can replay the number repeatedly.

So, how does Apple do it?

I am a bit confused by your posts then? If your sole Apple device is an iPhone, and you do not use Apple services for anything but with that iPhone, then what does Windows have to do with anything? Just don’t use Windows with any Apple services.

Is it just logging into these Apple user forums with a Windows box that is the issue? Because you choose not to use cookies? If that’s all it is, and your adamant about dis-allowing cookies and retaining them, then yes, you’re going to need a push notification on your iPhone every time you login in here, regardless of browser used.

So, there is a way to use Find My iPhone withOUT needing iCloud on your computer? What about backup? Doesn't that need iCloud? Also, how would I use Dell Mobile Connect without having Windows 10 see the iPhone and register it for use with Windows 10? Dell Mobile Connect is great as I can do everything from it (except use iPhone apps) without needing to pick up the phone. Plus, I use YouMail as well as Dell Mobile Connect for voicemail transcribed to text (I usually can't understand soft spoken females who leave voice mail so I need it transcribed to text). I can get the text version via the iPhone YouMail app but it also is sent via email and also shows up in Dell Mobile Connect usually. I use Thunderbird for email (for close to 20 years) and I can't use it on the iPhone so I don't have any email on the phone.

As for these forums, they don't display well on my default browser. Plus, I won't be able to post this when I finish because I will have gotten logged out by then! I'll get an error that is not a bit accurate as it says to try again to post it in a few minutes. It won't tell me the real problem which is that I keep getting logged out here while I am typing and that trying again to post won't fix an automatic logout that does NOT show in my browser! So, I have to login again and doing that loses the post I just typed. Windows forums used to be this way years ago but for years now at good forums posts dont disappear if you have to login again to be able to post. Luckily, I have browser extensions that retain text typed in text boxes so I can retrieve that after I login again and then post it. However, I should be able to login permanently and if I could do that then it would make sense to allow permanent first party cookies on my browsers for these forums. Plus, it is extremely user unfriendly to not have some sort of "peek" when I type the password here. I'm sitting at home at my computer desk and no one is here to grab my password as I type it. On Windows, my browsers store passwords to sites and if I don't want to store passwords then they also show me the password as "peek" after it is typed so I can correct mistakes. But that doesn't happen on my browsers at these forums. Other Windows users with an iPhone have the same complaint. The best Windows browsers don't even use "peek" ...they show the password as you type it if you have the proper extension installed (and you are a sensible user who doesn't type passwords in public areas where others may see them). Not being able to see the password simply encourages the user to use a very simplistic, easily typed and easily guessed one which I would think it not something Apple wants.

There are a lot of folks with Windows computers and iPhones and Apple should get their act together better. Microsoft blocked my last Windows 10 upgrade and forced me to an older version because Apple had not yet made iCloud compatible with the Windows version that I should have gotten.
