Update on this: I contacted Microsoft and there is a known issue with this Office installation for Mac. The solution was to allow them access to install a previous version and then to update via the software update menu to the latest version. Not ideal but the issue is solved.

Double-check your Microsoft Office 365 subscription to verify that you still have available installs.
If you run any anti-virus apps on your Mac disable them. If not, you will need to contact Microsoft support for further assistance with this matter.
Thanks for suggestion. I have just purchased the Macbook Air along with MS Office for Home use at the same time. The product key unlocked the download from Microsoft and I downloaded the package. This was the resulting message on attempting standard installation.
