iPhone Xs Dual SIM Question

This may be a bit premature ... but I have a question about how to use the iPhone Xs's dual SIM feature.

I currently have AT&T wireless on my iPhone 6. I travel to the UK often and while there use an old iPhone with a UK "Three" carrier SIM. I'd love to be able to use these two SIMs in an iPhone XS, that is, AT&T as the eSIM and a Three SIM in the second SIM slot.

There's one issue, however. When in the US I want to use only the AT&T SIM, and while in the UK use only the Three SIM - otherwise the second SIM will connect to a local carrier and I'll be charged by for this service.

Will there be a way to select which SIM is to be used and turn off the other SIM? I don't see anything in the documentation for iOS 11 or iOS 12 to address this situation.

Thanks.

Thanks for all the useful replies. (For the sake of this discussion, I suggest ignoring the issue of which carriers will accept an e-SIM since most probably will in the near future.)

Unfortunately, I don't think deggie's comment about the issue being moot is correct. In my experience, if I turn on my AT&T iPhone in the UK (or Mexico, for that matter), it will connect to an AT&T-partner local plan and AT&T will charge me $10/day for an international connection. Ditto with my UK Three iPhone in the US - if I turn it on while in the US, it will connect to a US carrier automatically. I'm not sure if turning-off roaming has any effect on this behavior. Of course, if I'm wrong, I'm eager to be corrected.

The Apple support page, "Learn about Dual SIM ..." is also not very helpful in this regard. It does not appear that one can completely turn off the secondary SIM.

Many of the press reports on the iPhone Xs say that the dual SIM is particularly useful for international travel.

The basic issue, however, is how to use the dual SIM iPhone Xs for international travel without incurring international roaming charges on the secondary SIM.
