imac wireless keyboard and mouse were stolen. I attached a mouse, but I can't get the new keyboard recognized to type my password to enter

If the new keyboard is wireless and has not been paired, you will need a wired keyboard (borrow one from a neighbor or buy one for emergencies) until you can sign in and then pair the wireless keyboard.
