use E-sim in the US but keep a foreign sim in for traveling abroad

This dual sims setup for the new iphone Xs is a bit confusing. I travel to Asia often and swap sims to use local wireless service was how we handle the issue. Now with the dual sim setup, can we simply keep the foreign sim in the slot & register the E-sim with US carrier to use here at home?
