The music had to come from your computer to get onto the iPod to begin with. It should still be in your library.

Any music downloaded from the itunes store can be re-downloaded at no charge.

If it's music that was ripped from CD's, you can re-rip the music from the original media. If you no longer own the original media, you no longer own the music.

The output on those iPods was called Firewire.

A long time ago, these cables were pretty common - it splits to Firewire for charging and the USB for data transfer: ~NIB~ Dynex 30-Pin Dock Connector to 4-Pin USB and 6-Pin FireWire Cable, DX-IPSC | eBay

That would be worth a try.

Otherwise....depending on which iMac you have, you should have Firewire 800, Thunderbolt 1/2 or Thunderbolt 3/USB-C.

Supposedly this adapter would work to get you from Firewire 400 (your iPod's cable) to Firewire 800: https://www.amazon.com/Sonnet-FireWire-400-Adapter-FAD-824/dp/B0000CDJPQ

And then, depending on which iMac you have, you may need the Firewire 800>Thunderbolt 1/2 adapter as well: Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter - Apple

Either way, you're spending about the same amount of money.
