Will an Apple band for Series 2 42mm fit the new Series 4 40mm or do I need to get the 44mm for my extra bands to fit? I've seen responses that say that 42mm fits the 44mm and that all bands will work, so just want to verify.

You can match this band with any Apple Watch Series 4 case of the same size. It also works with all previous versions of Apple Watch, including Apple Watch Series 3. The 40mm band works with the 38mm case; the 44mm band works with the 42mm case.
When I go to the Apple store accessories page it says the new bands (40 & 44mm) will work with all previous watch versions. I would assume that is the case in reverse.
