Every start up the 'Checking iTunes Library' box displays and takes several minutes to finish whatever mystery it's solving. Meanwhile, processing, web page load, other apps, run very slow while it finishes.

Do you have any third party AV software? Checking the library happens if iTunes senses that the library wasn't closed cleanly the last time it was shut down. It uses a hidden file called sentinel as part of this process. Check your iTunes folder for hidden .tmp files which are another sign that updates to the library might not be completing smoothly.

How big is your iTunes library? You might want to clear the cache to speed it up. If you infrequently use iTunes, I would recommend to just disable the “Check iTunes Library”.
I just leave iTunes open all the time.

Checking iTunes Library EVERY darn start up takes forever
