How to turn off safari address bar recommendations?

Let me preface this by saying I love apple tech, but their safari recommendation engine is flaming garbage.


For an example, I type ”fortnite” in the address bar expecting to google search fortnite, but safari pops in with their “top hit” fortniteconfig.com, and of course I press enter without noticing. I type “china” expecting to google search china and I get directed to chinasprout.com. I believe I’ve visited these sites at some point in the past. Oh, and it only works for some keywords.


On iphone X its “top hits”, while on macbook pro I believe its siri recommendations or something.


How do I permanently get rid of this? Its an absolute joke (in fact, I laugh when it happens).

Try Safari/Preferences/Search/Smart Search Field - try unchecking Enable Quick Website Search. If that doesn't help, try disabling the other items there until you get the results you want.
