iOS 12 update error. Can't reboot iPhone 7

I just tried updating my iPhone 7 from iOS 11.4.1 to 12. Prior to starting, I had about 24GB free on my phone. I received an error saying the update had failed. The home screen became all weird with most app icons missing. When I tried to go back to the settings app, it would crash and take me back to the home screen. I tried restarting the phone but now it's stuck on the apple logo. I tried to force restart many times by pressing the power button + volume down but it only goes back to the apple logo.

I tried connecting my phone to my MPB but I got this error message:" iTunes could not connect to the iPhone “**** iPhone 7” because an invalid response was received from the device."

I tried reconnecting and rebooting many times.

Any suggestion on what to try next?

iPhone 7, iOS 12

The problem is solved. At first I was worried I couldn't put my phone in recovery mode because I couldn't shut it off. It kept showing the Apple logo. I was running the latest version of iTunes and MacOs so that wasn't the issue.

I finally managed to put the phone in DFU mode (I think. Held the power button, then the volume down button, then let go of the power button only while keeping the volume button pressed). iTunes finally saw the phone and gave the option to restore or update it. I chose update but iTunes lost the phone again while the download was in progress. I managed to reconnect but only saw the restore option. Tried again and finally got to do the update to iOS 12. After rebooting I got a white screen with the apple logo and a message saying "press home to restore". Then there was a progress bar and it said "Attempting data recovery". This took a while. Then another progress bar... and... update completed! Everything is back into place.
