Adblock, Ublock Origin or content blocker app

I just updated Safari to v.12. (I’m still on macOS Sierra 10.12.6.)

I hope to upgrade to High Sierra as soon as I go through my apps & make a plan for those that will no longer work. (Just in time for Mohave, LOL)

As you know Adblock will no longer work since Safari will not work with extensions & need to get an app from app store now.

Adblock now has an “Adblock for Safari" app but not great reviews.2.5/5. 85 reviews.

Adblock Plus is a completely different app & I’ve read they sell companies the ability to run ads even when supposed to be blocked.

Ublock Origin is supposed to be very good (completely different vs. Ublock which gets bad reviews!) But, I do not see it in the app store. I also read that it slows you down if you go back & forth on a web page since it must reload each time.

Different users mention other ad blocking apps.

Then there are content blocking apps which also block ads.

I wonder if a content blocking app would be a better choice.

Adblock has worked fine for me for years, except last few months it seems many web sites tell me they know I am using an ad blocker & I must disable it for their site or pay to subscribe. I usually tell Adblocker to not run on that page so I can read the article.

Is there a consensus for a free ad blocking or content blocking app, that will not slow down my browser?

Thanks!

Note that Safari imposes a limit on how many rules can run under Extensions when using the "Content Blocking API" (think it's 50,000), you get around that by ticking the bottom box for using "old API".

Not sure if there is a performance difference between the two, would think using Apple's current API (default) would be the better, but haven't tested. I believe the App version doesn't have this limitation.

The additional problem I have with the App version is to do with what it installs on your system, and where. I like to keep a "clean" computer so think very carefully about what goes on it, even then I check in advance for file locations to see how easy it would be to remove, Extensions are a dream from that respect, wonder what these Content Blocking App's will be depositing and will they cause issues elsewhere (a bit of my OCD coming out I think).

I must admit to having had high hopes when I first heard about Apple making changes in Mojave and Safari to combat/limit tracking and excessive web content loading, but from the little time I've been using them nothing much has appeared to have changed, and a blocker of some sort still seems a necessity.

Anyhow, sorry for highjacking your discussion (although not many have replied yet), would have thought a few more that are using Content Blockers would have come along by now and given some additional advice/insight, maybe it's not something the typical Mac user bothers about, but would also be nice to know if I'm overlooking something with respect to Mojave, because "out-of-the-box" it appears to block very little!

Based on your suggestion, I unchecked Ad Blocker & am trying AdGuard AdBlocker 2.10.8

Since it is an extension, I don’t think it will work after 2019. Need to switch to using apps.

I may try Ka-Block app after I upgrade to Mohave.

Thanks!

I see I still have Adblock 2.69.0 by BetaFish Inc. in extensions.

It now says: “This extension will slow down your web browsing”

Also, I thought by 2019, No more extensions for Safari, need to switch to apps?

I have enabled it, perhaps temporarily.

On the Adblock knowledge base it says:

“We encourage our Safari users to give the new AdBlock app a try now. All Safari 12 users will need to move to the app by the end of 2018.”

It seems they think their new Adblock app. Is better. But, as I mentioned, the reviews are not great.

And they say:

“Safari App Extensions are faster, more secure, and lighter on computer memory and processor performance than legacy extensions are.”

So, I am thinking I should probably get some app from the app store instead of an extension to block ads.

What is the best solution? Comments?

That was the 1st place I had checked. This takes me to the app store window. This is where I started when 1st notified after updated Safari & AdBlocker was deactivated. Several possibilities (Not sure if they are extensions or apps)

I also found more (such as AdBlock) by doing a search in that window.

I tried to install Ka-Block but cannot since requires macOS 10.13!

Gave up & just went with the reactivation of Adblock which has changed (See their website) & very ineffective now.

I thought some people here would have recommendations on specific Ad Blocking apps or content blocking apps.

I think I'd rather use an app vs. an extension if extensions are going away soon.

Thanks!

Hi, growler

You‘ve just saved me starting a post, because I have basically the same questions. Like you I now notice the warnings and the fact Apple are trying to move us away from Extensions to Apps for AdBlocking (and may be other types), the reason I believe is security (the Extensions provider could see you data) and speed.

The issue I’ve noticed is the few alternative App solution’s appear to come at a cost, the dreaded monthly subscription instead of the one off cost! (although most of the Extension where free) and not many (good ones) are available yet.

I was going to post and ask what are others now doing who employ an Adblocker, are they remaining with Extensions or have they jumped to one of the few App methods, which I believe works at a system level (ie will protect everything running on your machine, not just Safari).

The only problem is the App alternative doesn’t or may never exist for the accepted “best” Extension currently, namely uBlock Origin. I’m currently sticking to the AdGuard Extension for the iMac and AdGuard App for iPhone and iPhone.

So, what are you all doing, have you stuck with uBlock Origin from GitHub, running another Extension or jumped to the App version, if so which one.
