How do you divide a single cell number?

I have a cell in which there is variable total ie Cell B38 is a Changing Total Profit ( CTP which changes depending on expenses which change all the time).

That CTP figure applies to a fixed job fee to cover 6 days work

In another random Cell B40 I want to show the daily fee based on what is currently displayed in B38

ie so divide Cell B38 by 6

What is the formula for this?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch,Early 2015), OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)

You can start with the online help in the Numbers menu item "Help > ..."

User uploaded file

You can also, as you have done, post specific questions here. There are many helpful people.

just so you know... the mathematical operators are:

Add: "+"

Subtract: "-"

Multiply: "*"

Divide: "/"

these are commonly used in most every computing program. Another way to see how something is done is to open the built-in templates in Numbers and direct them to see how they work.

when you type the equal sign in a cell, then formula edit appears. On the right of the window you will see the formula browser. take a look through the functions to read about what they work and how to use them.

Thanks Wayne, this works perfectly... ! But how did you arrive at that forumula?

Looking through the 'forumula' button on the tool bar there seems to be no symbol for divide

How would I have found your answer from the normal menus in Numbers? It cannot be that difficult to work out a formula which says for example: Cell A2 = Cell G8 divided by nAmount ...

Hi ms,

The arithmetic operators are +, -, * and /

In the formula editor, Numbers will automatically change * to × (the multiplication sign—NOT the lower case letter x) and / to ÷. Enter them using the 'traditional' forms shown above. Search 'operators' in Numbers help for further information on these and other operators used in Numbers.

Barry
