Apple Watch 3/Watchos 5 - Swimming not counting laps or calories correctly.

I have an Apple Watch 3, and just updated to WatchOS 5 yesterday. Today during my swim workout, the yardage counting is completely off - I swam 6500 yards, and it shows 100 yards. The calories burned are about 4-500 different than normal, the auto sets are completely wrong/missing as well as times and everything. Is there a bug with the new watchOS and swimming? Anyone else have this issue? I swim the exact same distance/time 5 days a week and the Apple Watch workout app has always been extremely consistent in measuring distance, time, strokes, etc. I count my laps and the Apple Watch historically always got it exactly right. Now today, after watchos 5 update, it's not even close.

Thanks,

Andy

I've had a similar problem since at least series 2 and I now have had a series 3 and currently a series 4. The watch keeps the swim time correctly, but the yardage shows "0 yards". When I finish my swim and discharge the water and stop the swim, the correct statistics show up (from what I can tell). It sounds like Apple's Software V&V is really awful. I've complained about this several times with Apple, and I'm on the phone with them for as much as an hour, but it does not help at all. This is an intermittent problem, but it seems to be happening all of the time now. I guess I can go back to a Casio Pathfinder with a titanium band with steel pins that rust, if I have to count my own laps. These apple watches are not free and Apple is not addressing this because it's been going on for a few years now. Apple refuses to refund my money and they are not transparent with what is really going on. Too bad, otherwise, it's a nice watch. I also use it for bike rides and it seems to be working well in that application.

Purchased Iwatch 4 in Nov. 18. Swim app would not record anything correctly, also showed zero laps. After 4 months of correspondence with Apple, the watch was replaced, however the swim app. malfunctioned the same way. The info. was given to Apple engineers 3 months ago, without any result. I have been an Apple user for 33 years, and this is the first complaint about Apple service. I feel that I am being completely ignored.

I had the same problem as a few others in this thread: my Series 4 was working fine until a few days ago. I noticed it didn't seem to be counting my laps as I was swimming them, but the end-of-workout summary was correct. I followed a few of the posted suggestions yesterday: force quit the workout app, force restart the watch & update the OS (5.2.1). Not sure which thing did the trick, but my watch was counting laps just fine this morning. Hope this helps!

Same problem here. I’m on 5.2.1. Lap counting worked fine yesterday, but today it decides not to work. This is the 3rd or 4th time it’s failed in the past year or so. What gives??? The engineers / product managers on this feature get paid $300-400k per year and get *plenty* of testing resources. Why can’t they fix this one for good?

Had this exact problem and resting the watch like this worked for me - thank you

This was the solution -

First,

I force quit the workout app - open the work out app on your watch, hold down

the watch button until the “power off” screen appears, release the side button

and push and hold the Digital Crown until the app closes.

Next,

I force reset the watch. Hold down both the side button and the Digital Crown

together until the screen goes blank and then you see the Apple logo. Release

when you see the Apple logo.

After

doing those both last night and then swimming again this morning, all swimming

activity tracking was back to normal.

With Apple Watch 4, have the same problem. During 5 months of corresponding with apple tek, I sent a movie of my swim for 6 lengths. Like you I swim 1/3 mile 5 days per week doing the breast stroke. They told me that because I glide after each stroke, the recording is disturbed, which is nonsense. Because there are so many similar malfunctions posted, I am convinced that the software is prone to change. In using Apple products for 32 years, this is the first time Apple has let me down. Other that the indoor swim App everything else works. Very disapointed.

I have a similar problem. I have a series 4 operating on OS5.2.1. During the swim workout the watch interface has stopped displaying laps and distance swam. When I end the workout all the data is available for me in the workout app on my phone. The data looks generally correct I have no issue there. The problem is having no lap or distance count on my watch during the workout. This problem has started recently. Any suggestions Apple?

Hi there, I have the apple watch series 4 cellular and I have been using it while training for my first triathlon and today for the first time it stopped counting the laps on the display but is still registering the laps when I finish the swim and save the workout. Is anybody able to help? Watching the laps as I go along really keeps me motivated.

Same issue here on series 3 with os 5.2.1

Not displaying laps or distance right, either shows 0, way behind or unhelpfully starts me about 1600m in! When I end workout and sync it sorts itself out!

Phoned apple about this in May, they made me force close, force reset iPhone and watch, unpair watch and re-pair from scratch. Fixed it for 3 swims (been mainly cycling and walking recently). Today went to use it and the same issue occurred.

They wanted me to go go through the same steps again but I insisted they repair it instead and now getting an express repair (replacement sent out with box to send mine back).

Apple are still not recognising this as an issue as it doesn’t show up on the analytics reports. Really not on and very much considering putting my money into a Garmin watch instead as I can’t deal with something that doesn’t work as it should when there is no willingness to sort out the problem!
