4 hours on ATT to activate esim and nothing

What is the process to apply my second number to my Iphone XS Max? Being told by ATT, that i required Apple update to allow for esim to work....Att cannot provide me any information to connect my number, yet my work phone is now unusable,,,

iPhone 5, iOS 7.0.2, 2014 Mazda 3

eSIM connection for the dual SIM phones will not be ready until an update is released later this fall.

Thanks for responding. I just was on with an Att tech who was very helpful. Hopefully sooner than later as this 1500.00 was purchased solely for that reason.
