iPhone XS Max Weak 5GHz WIFI Reception
I used to have full bars at my bed with iPhone X, now the Max only has 2. And it has trouble reconnect to the WIFI after airplane mode is turned on with WIFI turned on.

In all likelihood, Apple will fix this with a software update. There's very little that can't be adjusted by software. If they simply can't (which is not a likely scenario), Apple will replace devices. There are literally millions of these in use already. Apple won't be replacing millions of phones. They'll do what they ALWAYS do, work behind the scenes on a good solution, roll it out and this thread will die down as people are out having fun with their phones.
Also, you can pretty much guarantee Apple engineers are working with the cellular providers as they also have a significant stake in the game.
At this point I’d say it’s still too early to know 100%, but the software update scenario seems more likely than replacing hardware. Although, that could be another scenario. It’s possible that something was off during production and early/initial units are seeing the problems while the newer/corrected units aren’t seeing any problems. Still, for the new phones to only be officially out in the wild for a week and there be this many people reporting that Apple’s reached out to them to help? That’s VERY optimistic. And these things have a 90 or 120 day warranty out of the box, not including you also purchased AppleCare. Going back to the iPhone 3G and all of those battery problems? Remember that? Batteries almost burning people’s legs? I think I had 4 or 6 replacements. Seriously. I remember that being so crazy because the Apple employees were literally throwing the unopened new iPhone 3G boxes to each other across the store like footballs. Comical. At that time, I had opened up a case over the phone each time, and each time I went back to the SAME Apple Store, they had no record of my cases. That was in AZ. I’m back in IL now and it’s different/better. Still just replacing a phone with a new one, seemingly without even really questing me too much, either. I’m pretty confident this issue will be resolved, too. Some how.
I would advise calling in or emailing instead of the apple chat app. I had no luck there at all. The person didn’t believe me when I said it was a known issue and said I was the first to report and suggested I go into apple. When I mentioned this discussion thread the person said that forums aren’t official apple. So yea...avoid the chat app!

The calls and emails I received from the two advisors I spoke to came as a result of posting here and on Twitter. Of course at that time my post here was only on the second page. Then the second person called because of my Twitter post to Apple Support. He had all the notes from my first conversaion and the case number. He was the one who told me they were trying to reach out to everyone who had posted and asking those with obvious issues to install the logging profile. In general I’m not seeing the issues many of you are posting about so we deferred going the profile route. I would have been happy to if it would have helped. But I’m assuming by now enough of you have done this and that they must have a good idea what’s going on. At the time I spoke to him he said they didn’t have a handle on it yet.
These are their premiere devices that have created a lot of publicity buzz, and I’m assuming a fair amount of profit. They will make this right. I can only see returning them if they are unusable as is for you and you have no other option. For those like me on the Apple Upgrade option returning them is simple but then you’ll have to start that process over again and may have to wait a good while to get the version you want.
Apple support reached out to me and pulled logs from my Xs. I made the personal decision to return the Xs. My X runs flawlessly so I decided to hang with it for now. The Xs was great in every other way. I am confident Apple will rectify the issues. For my part, Apple was very helpful and courteous. I was pleasantly surprised that they reached out to me. When I returned the device to the Apple store it was seamless transaction. I had both WiFi and LTE issues but they were minimal compared to some others. However I could not justify paying on a 1000.00+ phone not working to capacity when I have a current paid phone that is working as it should.
I reported the issue to two senior advisers and was told the issue is bein escalated. I do notice a drop off in 5ghz reception or failure to connect to 5ghz in some parts of my house. No problem connecting to 2.4 or LTE. Quality of the voice reception is good. Since I upgraded from the X to the XS Max because of the larger screen, I will keep it and wait until iOS update.
Add me to the list of those with 5ghz reception problems. I have an iPad Pro right next to my XS Max and the Ipad has strong 5ghz reception, the XS cant even see it let alone connect to it even when I try to force it too. My 7plus never had an issue with the 5ghz band.
If I compare to my iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 Plus, I do have a much weaker and unreliable service with my new iPhone XS Max using LTE, I am using T-Mobile.
My carrier settings were updated 2 times last week. I have done Reset Network Settings and I have also Restored the phone with iTunes. No visible change so far.
Definitely the XS Max is underperforming compared to my iPhone 8 Plus.
I’ve wrote a on here a couple times about 5ghz not connecting or holding the connection, but I said my AT&T LTE has been great. Well add me to the list of LTE not even connecting with full bars this morning. Went from full LTE bars, tried to open safari webpage and it dropped to 1 bar and would not open page. iPhone XS max
This is my issue as well. I was out and about yesterday and was mostly connected to 4G instead of LTE, all in areas where I’ve always had a reliable signal. Same with dropping from 5GHz to 2.4GHz on Wi-Fi. I’ve tried a network reset, and that seems to help initially, but not for less than a day. Rinse repeat.
Please contact Apple Support directly using the link "Contact Support" at the top of this page and let them know. It is important that they get as much data about this issue as possible to help them identify exactly what is causing the issue.
I tried to report it, gave them like 5 links to the charging issues and wifi cellular issues, and they acted like they didn't care and wanted to troubleshoot my phone. I said you can't fix my phone when 100s to 1000s are doing it. You need to get your developers to fix the software/hardware of the devices asap.
Was this on the phone or through support app? The person I talked to on the support app wasn’t helpful. Then an AppleCare advisor called me based on these discussion groups and took some logs and told me they are aware and are working on trying to find a solution. Apparently it isn’t just affecting phones here in the US
I called twice and talke to two senior advisers. I pointed out this thread and numerous complaints about WiFi problem. They escalated it and I got an email from an Apple technician who is setting up a call with an engineer. Unfortunately I will not be available until 10/19.
Nobody could possibly answer that question. I do absolutely believe Apple will put out an update, which will solve this for most users. What no one can answer is when. Apple never publicly discusses what they're working on or exactly when they'll release something. What is universally true every time there's an issue is at some point they solve it.
