iTunes changing song info

iTunes 12.8.0.150 on iMac 21.5 inch, late 2012 running macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 (2.9 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3).

This just began - I usually update my song info once I've purchased the item to how I like it (it's a neurotic thing, I acknowledge that). It seems that iTunes is automatically changing it back to what it was when the song was first purchased. Nothing spurred this on. Is this an option I can turn on and off? I've looked through the Preferences and couldn't see anything. It's ridiculous this is somehow a thing.

Appreciate any help.

Edit 1: I just realized it has done this to every song I've purchased since I started using iTunes. This is a monumentally stupid feature.

Hello Pragmatic,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
If I understand your post correctly, you're trying to change the name of a song that is in iTunes but everytime you try to change it, it reverts back to the original song title.
I am happy to provide you some information about this.

If you are a member of Apple Music, that could be the reason that the song reverts back to the original title.

If you're not a member of Apple Music and are trying to edit a song you imported from a CD, then follow the article below.

Let me know if you have any questions.
Have a great day!

Hi there. This has been an intermittent issue with iTunes and purchased content for some time. Here is a thread where I first ran into it: How do I stop i-tunes from changing the genres for my songs without my consent? It seems to involve iTunes reading the store metadata for your purchases rather than what is stored in the tags. It isn't necessarily clear if the tags have been updated or just the database. That might depend on which version of iTunes, on which platform, this occurs on, and other factors such as iCloud Music Library being enabled. I wrote a script to recover affected metadata on Windows but that technique cannot be applied quite so easily on a Mac. What sort of changes are we talking about in your case? Personally my main issues are with capitalization so I wrote another script that enforces my own rules, to which I can freely add exceptions. Again a Windows script that wouldn't be trivial to port, however my point is that if the changes you routinely make can be easily codified that might be the way to go. Is Time Machine enabled? If so you could try to restore the state of your library to some point just before before this became an issue, then take your computer offline before running iTunes. Perhaps it will leave your data alone when you go online again.
