iOS 12 how/when does Screen Time sync across devices

I have set up Screen Time for both devices and so expected to see the same summary on each and the same device detail on each.

But they never show the same total or device detail.

Obviously, somewhere, somehow the information is synced via iCloud, but I can find no obvious way of making this happen, nor anything about when, how it is done.

Can anyone point me to something that describes this?

Hello David_D49,

Thank you for being a part of Apple Support Communities. We're glad you're here. I understand you seek to use the new Screen Time feature in iOS 12 across multiple devices you own. I'd love to offer some details that could help resolve your question.

The following article details Screen Time and how to configure it:

Use Screen Time to get insights about how you use your device

View your report and set limits

Screen Time gives you a detailed report about how your device is used, apps you've opened, and websites you've visited, any time that you want to see it. Just go to Settings > Screen Time and tap the graph. There, you can see your usage, set limits for your Most Used apps, and see how many times a device was picked up or received a notification.

If you turned on Share Across Devices, you can view overall usage across devices that are signed in with your Apple ID and password.

As mentioned in the quote above, the option to Share Across Devices requires all of these said devices to be signed in with the same Apple ID and password. I'd recommend trying this as the first step.
Cheers.

Similar problem with a slight twist:

iPad Pro

iPhone 6

iPhone can receive the screen time info for the iPad Pro

iPad Pro is not receiving info about iPhone 6.

In addition, the name of my iPhone 6 in Screen Time is incorrect. I was naming it something like ”THiPhone” previously when I first enabled Screen Time. Later, I changed the name of the iPhone (from the About screen) to “THiPhone 6” and that has not updated in the Screen Time and it’s been over a week now. Everywhere else, the new name of the iPhone is taking place including when checking what “This device” is, etc.

I tried to find ways to delete the Screen Time data from my iCloud including logging out of iCloud and resetting the devices. Not sure if that deleted the data, but it certainly didn’t resolve the name issue. The old name of “THiPhone” is still being displayed.

Hopefully a fix is made in the next dot version of iOS 12.

i-rina - I have already done all of that - read all the instructions and signed in with the same id on both devices (They have been signed in like that for years!). I did that before I raised the question.

I am

pointing out a glaring inconsistency in the information that is then provided (a potential bug) because logic suggests the devices should show the SAME TOTAL screen time and the SAME values for each device adding up to that total? They don’t! At the moment my iPad shows a total for today for ALL DEVICES of 58mins. My iPhone has just mysteriously update from 17mins to 35mins for ALL devices.

and asking for an explanation of

  • When are the values from the two devices synchronised? (Eg is it only when my devices run backup at night? At some fixed interval, all the time? As I enter the app?)
  • is there a way of forcing synchronisation? (As, for example, one can force “reminders” to sync using the calendar app.)

I hope you now understand my question!
