U3214Q 4K scaling in MacOS

Go to System Preferences->Displays, hold down the Option key and select Scaled.

It should offer you more options than when you just select without the Option key.

Here is what I see for my 1080p display:

And here is what I see, for the same display, using Option (there are more, just not all visible):

Maybe you want to have a look at a third party utility.

SwitchResX is supposed to offer way more resolution options than the ones presented by macOS.

I believe it has a trial period, so you can try and see if it will do what you want.

The options available depend on the display.

I don't have a 4K display, so naturally I do not see any HiDPI choices.

FWIW, this "Option key trick" is not new, and it goes back way before there were 4K displays.

I think Bob meant "extended desktop mode".

Use extended display mode and set the resolution of the external display to what you like.

What do you think the difference is between setting your monitor to 1440 DPI and 1440 HiDPI? The monitor is always HiDPI.

Oh geez. Your monitor is always 3840 x 2160 and is scaled to 2560x1440.
