Time Machine Problem

Hello,

I have been using Time Machine without any problem for years. Recently, I purchased the new MacBook Pro and I am now having a problem completing the backup. I tried three different external drives and they are all experiencing the same issue.

Running macOS High Sierra 10.13.6

  • Each time I start Time Machine it looks good. I am only using 115 GB of a 500 GB SSD.
  • Time Machines starts the backup and reflects the data correctly.
  • Each time the backup gets to 90% complete, the backup size starts growing along with the "backed up" size.
  • They grow at the same rate until the whole backup stalls out.

It would seem to me that this is a bug in Time Machine allowing some temporary file to be backed up causing an infinite loop. You can see both the size and backup growing in the attached gif. The backup remains at 90% for up to 3 days. After that, I give up and try again with the same results. I have completed the same cycle 7 or 8 times now.

Things I have tried so far.

  • Excluding my time external backup from Sophos scanning
  • Turning off Sophos control
