Default "Save As" Location (Should Be From Where File Was Opened...But It Is NOT)

Doing a "Save As" on a file from within an application (e.g. Word or Excel) does NOT default to the location where I opened the file (instead it defaults to wherever I saved the LAST file I was PREVIOUSLY working on). This is WRONG, or at least should be CONFIGURABLE.

Detailed description...

When I open a file using an application on my MacBook Pro (High Sierra), for example MS-Word, if I want to save that file as a different name it is easy enough to do a "Save As". However, the default location for a "Save As" is the NOT the location where I opened that file, but instead it is the location where I saved the PRIOR file that I was working on. Also, unless I have saved a document to the current location (i.e. only opened a file from that folder), that folder does NOT appear in my "Recent Places" list. This is consistent behavior when working in different applications (or at least across MS-Office applications e.g. Excel, Powerpoint, etc.). My expectation (both from a logic perspective and how things work in both Mac and Windows prior to my getting this laptop) is that if I opened a file from a folder, that should be my default folder when doing a "Save As" (and also that folder should show up in my list of Recent Places). It is common behavior to do a "Save As" to save a file as an increment version...but I have to navigate the whole directory structure just to get back to my starting folder (unless I've already saved a file to that folder in that session). How does one change this default behavior?

In case that narrative does not make sense, here is what happens today:

1) Save file "123" to folder "ABC" and close that file

2) Open file "456" from folder "XYZ" (by double clicking on it in Finder)

3) From within the application (Word, Excel, etc.) do a "Save As" (i.e. so you can save as "v2" or whatever)

4) The default location for the "Save As" is folder ABC (the last place I SAVED a file)

5) Folder XYZ does not even show up in the "Recent Places" list

6) I have to navigate from my home folder back to wherever the folder I opened the file from in order to save a copy of the file to the same location with a different name (THIS IS THE PROBLEM...AND IS PRETTY TYPICAL ACTIVITY)

Here is what I would expect the behavior to be...

1) Save file "123" to folder "ABC" and close that file

2) Open file "456" from folder "XYZ" (by double clicking on it in Finder)

3) From within the application (Word, Excel, etc.) do a "Save As" (i.e. so you can save as "v2" or whatever)

4) The default location for the "Save As" is folder XYZ (the last place I OPENED a file)

5) Folder XYZ shows up in the "Recent Places" list

6) Very easy to save a file you a working on with a new name so you can keep multiple versions in one place

Why is the default behavior "backwards" to common sense and traditionally how things work? And is there any way to change this? Appreciate any thoughts or suggestions...thanks!

Current versions {7.2, 5.2, 8.2} of Pages, Numbers, and Keynote save in the last saved folder. Been this way since Fall 2013 and OS X Mavericks. Since Pages '09 v4.3 uses the same NSSavePanel as the newer applications, it also behaves this way. Preview's Export To… also remembers where it last saved.

Microsoft likes to stash a bunch of configurable parameters in its Application Preferences, so there may be some optional selection there about open and save behavior. Or not.

What version of office? What version of macos? How did you open the file. I've seen some weirdness with saveas... [It's working today😎.] How do you do the saveas?

Work "right" for me in office 2011 on yosemite. ... saveas goes to the folder the file is from.

I've did the hack to restore saveas to my pull down.

Thanks but not really a helpful comment...hoping to see if anyone is seeing the same or different behavior and if anyone knows if there is a user setting for controlling this behavior (like how you can set the depth of the "Recent Places" list). Also, pretty sure the "Recent Places" list is MacOS level functionality and not Microsoft's responsibility. Obviously I can log the question in regards to Office with Microsoft as well (and I have)...but the Office suite works great for me other than this "Save As" (file system level) behavior which is annoying (and I believe a result of recent updates because I only recently noticed this and could swear it used to work as expected).

Thanks and yes I actually just did a test with Pages and the "Save As" is as expected (defaults to wherever you opened the file from). As I mentioned in other comments, I have also logged this with Microsoft but as this is where the application interacts with the filesystem wanted to make sure I'm covering my bases (and to see what other people are seeing on their end). Thanks!

High Sierra 10.13.6

Microsoft Office for Mac 16.17 (Office 365 Subscription)

I can open a file by double clicking on it in Finder or by opening it from within Word / Excel / Powerpoint and it is the same result...doing a "Save As" (from the Word / Excel / Powerpoint menu) defaults to a folder where I was working "before" (i.e. a document I had open and saved earlier) vs. the folder where I opened the current document (which is the behavior you would expect...and behavior that I swear used to occur months ago...not sure if it changed after a Mac OS update or an MS Office update, but I stay current on versions and updates).

I have confirmed that other Macs in our office demonstrate the same behavior (all are kept current in terms of software and software updates).

Not sure if the same behavior exists on Pages / Numbers / Keynote as I don't use those programs (but I will experiment and see if they are same or different).

Let's say you have two files Documents/myFile.docx and another Desktop/myFile.docx. Now you opened them up in Word. You do a saveas... It would be very difficult for macos save dialog to figure out which file you were talking about to figure out what folder to use. It would seem to me that the app is making the decision what folder to default to.

Back to Microsoft until further notice.
