iPhone XS Max lightning port charging issue

So Just got my new iphone. and noticed this issue I've been having. I connect the lightning cable to my phone to charge and most of the time it’s automatically charges. However I’ve noticed several times plugging the phone in and no charge comes up. Tried unplugging and plugging back in, sometimes it’ll work. I started to test it out. And I noticed the times I plugged it in, and I get no charge, I‘d leave the phone alone for 10-15 seconds. I pick it up, the screen illuminarea and then the charging symbol pops up. ive Tested these only with apple cables. So I’m thinking it’s either a port issue or possibly software. Any ideas or recommendations ?

thanks.

When I contacted Apple-support, they said it was not an iOS issue but a sw issue that occurred when I set up an iPhone from an existing iPhone or a backup. Therefore there is no need for a bug fix of the iOS. Also they said it was not isolated to the new iPhone XS Max phones. The charging issue should therefore be fixed when I did a factory reset.

It's funny how no one ever reads the release notes and then they act all surprised.

https://developer.apple.com/documentation/ios_release_notes/ios_12_release_notes

"To improve security, iOS 12 may require you unlock your passcode-protected iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch in order to connect it to a Mac, PC, or USB accessory.

If you use iPod Accessory Protocol (iAP) USB accessories over the Lightning connector (such as CarPlay, assistive devices, charging accessories, or storage carts) or you connect to a Mac or PC you might need to unlock your device to recognize the accessory. If you don't unlock your device, it won't communicate with the accessory or computer, and it won't charge. Note that you don't need to unlock your device to charge using an Apple USB power adapter.

If a USB accessory isn't recognized after you unlock your device, disconnect it, unlock your device, and reconnect the accessory.

If you normally use a USB assistive device to enter your passcode, you may allow it to communicate with your device while it is locked by enabling “USB Accessories” in Settings > Face ID/Touch ID & Passcode."

My bet is it has something to do with a specific combo of a charging accessory and the charging port.

*******UPDATE*******

This has to be software related. I have the problem where once the phone is locked, even if you connect the phone to a power source and unlock the phone and start using it, IT STILL WONT RECOGNIZE THAT IT'S CHARGING.

So I connected the headphone dongle to the phone when locked, unloked the phone and hit play and the music started playing through the headphones.

Another way I tried this was quitting all applications, locking the iPhone, waiting 30 seconds, connecting the headphone dongle while the phone screen was black and then hitting the play button on the headphones (below right ear piece) and the song started right up 😁.

THIS HAS TO BE SOFTWARE RELATED!!!!!!!!

I discovered this problem last night on a 5 day old XS and spoke to Apple support, then a support supervisor. They pulled diagnostics from my phone. It doesn’t always start charging when plugged in - I have to touch it to wake it up before I hear the ‘ding’ and see the battery symbol. USB restriction settings made no difference. Reboots made no difference. It is not 100% repeatable, but the problem exists. I was able to duplicate the problem 10 or more times while on the phone with support. They are working on it. Jim

I have a case open, very easy to set up using the Apple Support app. Suggest everyone on here opens a case up. I will keep this thread updated.

Not happy at all. I paid a huge price and even took out Apple Care for the extra 2 years.

I hope it is software. I mean come on, did Apple not plug the thing in to see if it charged?

I have had the same issue with my iphone x 256gb since updating to ios12, i could charge my phone through a wireless charging pad, my macbook usb c charger and through a third party cable in my car however i couldnt charge with my iphone or ipad charger. I could also charge through connecting to my macbook but my phone wouldnt appear in itunes

Spoke to apple who eventually sent me to a locan apple reseller, their only advice was to pay for a replacement phone (£550) as i had a missing pin in my lightning port but couldnt explain how even with this missing pin i was able to charge with some chargers

I have an iPhone X and use two wireless chargers (one on my nightstand, one at work). They're both RavPower RP-PC013 (Wireless Charging Pad Stand). At home,I noticed that the LED ring was flashing when I put the phone on it and the phone wasn't charging. I thought the charger might be bad. Just found the same thing at the office. I restarted the phone and now the charger and phone are working normally. I did install the 12.1 public beta Thursday or Friday, I believe.

Posting in case this is useful for debugging purposes.

Experiencing a similar issue with a new iPhone XS. Albeit, mine also does not charge even when woken up / unlocked. Occurs even with the "USB Accessories" option enabled.

Additional info from testing includes:

  • Unplugging/plugging the cable on the iPhone has no effect.
  • Works if I disconnect and reconnect cable on the iMac it's plugged into.
  • Works if the phone restarts with cable already connected. Subsequently disconnecting and re-connecting causes the same issue.

@xMASTIFFSx

I am having the same exact issue. I have a gold XS Max 64Gig, and it will charge probably 67% of the time. I have to either unplug the cable, and plug it back it, then it is charging, then there are those times where I have to even power off the phone, and start all over to get it to charge. Also to others who say they are going to replace the phone, I am currently on my third phone, and have had the same issues, not all the time. It is randomly, and when this happens I notice the face recognition becomes extremely less and I find myself inputting my pass code to get into my phone.

It's pretty frustrating.

I have a question about the phone that I have not been able to find an answer to. My wife has a Samsung S9, and whenever she tries to call myself or my daughter who has the normal X. It goes directly to voicemail. We have called Verizon, reset the network settings, on all phones, and nothing. Any ideas?
