Problems upgrading to macOS Mojave on MacBook Pro 2018

As macOS Mojave was released today, I thought I would try to upgrade my 15" MacBook Pro 2018 to the latest software. However, when I'm running the installer, after around 2-3 minutes I get an error message that a problem has occurred, with no solution in sight. I have tried to reboot, turn it on and off, updated without internet etc etc, nothing works. This is the error message I'm getting (in Swedish):

It seems that many people have gotten confirmation from Apple that this is an issue with the T2 chip.

I would STRONGLY advice you to stay on whatever OS you are running now, do NOT try to install Mojave or reinstall the OS you are running. Even the people who have gotten it to work are experiencing several bugs with Mojave. If I were you, I would wait until Apple releases a patch for the OS so that it works with the new MBP:s. Thanks for all the insight everyone!

We got 3 new 2018 MBPs. All shipped with 10.13.6

The newest Security Update can't be installed

The Mojave Installation doesn't work (Mac OS can't be verified).

We get crypto_val errors in the First Aid DiskUtility check

I think apple messed it up. The Macs should have better been shipped with Mojave. We got them in end of October

Can't speak for Rawbknalb, but I purchased my 2018 MBP online, and I picked it up at the local Apple Store. The initial supplemental update for the T2 seems to have installed fine, but the current security update didn't. Neither did Mojave. Crypto_val error too. The only thing that helped was Internet Recovery to install Mojave (crypto_val is gone afterwards). But if you want/need to stick to High Sierra, i.e. you just want to install the security update, then I don't know what to do. Best would probably be to call Apple support and ask them if there's a way to use internet recovery to install the security update, not Mojave.

Next update will be interesting for me: will macOS 10.14.2 install? Or will it not?

I have an iMac 2015. The processor is a 3.3 Ghz Intel Core i5. I have successfully installed Mojave on this iMac and on a MBP. However, if I turn the iMac off, it will not boot to anything (including multiple backups). Instead, I have to reinstall Mojave with the command R keys. I have now reinstalled Mojave 4 times. And, I have now given up and bought a new machine because Apple Care expired on the 2015 iMac, and who knows how much a repair would cost. It is also nice to know that Apple will not take this machine in as a trade in. It must be too old! I am so stuck in the Apple ecosystem on so many levels that it would be months of pain to extricate myself and the entire house from Apple. If I could do so, I would and run back to a PC. There, the failures are predictable and not ridiculous such as with Apple, and I wouldn't be shelling out nearly $4,000 for a new machine with Apple Care. Apple is not interested in computers any longer; it has moved on to bigger and better things.

Hi Steven, sorry to hear you didn't have a good experience with Mojave, and your iMac. I have the same iMac model, and Mojave has worked nearly flawlessly. I have a 2TB Fusion drive, and that has also worked perfectly with APFS under Mojave. I also understand about feeling stuck in the Apple ecosystem. For me, it's mainly software holding me here. Sorry to hear that you went through the trouble of buying a whole new machine, just to fix what would probably an easy problem. I hope the new machine works out for you well.

Also, even though this is the Apple Community, I wouldn't blame you, or hold it against you if you did decide to switch at some point. I've been looking at other options besides Apple as well. Have a great day!

Dmauch: Thank you so very much. I had exactly the same install issues that Ann Laux described on my MacBook Pro when going fromHigh Sierra. My MBP is a Late 2012 13 inch. I followed your suggestion to use Terminal program to rename the sky’s to file. As soon as I did the system rebooted quickly, correctly, and has been operating very well ever since. You are my hero!! I was sure that I was permanently toast. I really appreciate the help and am expressly lucky to happen across knowledgeable people on these forums. Thanks again and Happy Holidays. You deserve them!

Just to add one more data point. I have a MacBook Pro 15" i9 with touchbar.

When I first got it it had crypto_val errors which was only able to be cured with booting into recovery erasing the HD and reinstalling the OS (High Sierra at the time).

I had held off upgrading till 10.14.2 was released. I reset the SMC as some advised.

Installation of Mojave went very smoothly and no discernible issues (except for a minor one with the text box in notes).

It could be that one needs to fix the crypto_val errors before upgrading, it could be resetting the SMC or that 10.14.2 fixed the upgrade issues.

Hopefully this information is helpful to someone.

Apple supervisor said i must I upgrade El Capitan to Mojave (not beta)

I downloaded Mojave installer but it won't install

i tried to uninstall--no luck. Then I moved it to Trash,& got this message:

'Mojave can't be moved to trash because it's currently in use'

What? Thousands upon thousands of complaints are lodged about this new OS--it's inconceivable this hasn't been corrected yet
