I am trying to upgrade my 2018 MacBook Pro 15" from High Sierra to Mojave, but it says "An error occurred installing macOS" at the very end of the installation. I got this MacBook Pro about a month ago. How can I update to Mojave successfully?

Hi All,
So I worked closely with a senior support team member (Thanks, Dean!) for the past week on this issue and I managed to resolve it.
First off, I run VyprVPN, Spoof-Mac (don't ask) and BitDefender.
Now, when I attempted to install Mojave the first time, I encountered an error similar to, if not identical to what has been described here, purportedly related to the BridgeOS failing to personalize and installation falling over with a non-descript error message (throwing codes such as 602, 204).
I captured my system data and sent it over to an engineer and he pointed me to my network connection is the likely root cause. The first suggestion was to create a new network location and test, then create an admin user account and try again, and also attempt to install after disabling/uninstalling any VPN, anti-virus or other network traffic manipulating software (including things that mask hardware addresses) and my firewall.
I also whitelisted *.com.apple.* addresses, and whitelisted the Mojave Installer in my network settings.
None of this worked for me.
However, I did make a significant change to my VPN configuration which finally allowed the installation to complete.
VyprVPN uses a proprietary protocol known as Chameleon which is an encrypted connection masked to outwardly appear as regular traffic. Basically, a VPN designed to not appear to be a VPN (this is to avoid the usual scanning done by certain ISP's, websites or government internet gates that would flag this kind of traffic and restrict or otherwise hinder it). By switching my VPN protocol to OpenVPN (still 256 encrypted but no longer outwardly appearing and regular traffic), my BridgeOS personalization step was able to complete and my installation progressed and finished without issue.
My suspicion is that Apple's listener has a decision tree on incoming connection attempts based on the traffic. As the installer sent its request under Chameleon protocol, I doubt there was any decision in place to handle an Apple installer connection coming in encrypted, looking un-encrypted.

I have the exact same problem. So far nothing has helped. Tried resetting SMC and re-downloading and installing but get the same error message with 15-seconds left to complete.
Great...can you explain how to reset all of the proxy in the network? I would love to try this as a possible solution!
Apple support called me yesterday and collected log files from my 2018 MBP 15". Hopefully, it will be helpful to fix this problem.
my 13" MacBook Pro with touch bar 2018 only 3 months old has the same issue. they better fix it as it is an unnecessary inconvenience to many of us who just want a darn update

I also had this problem with MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2018) and Intel Core i9 processor. Have already tried rerunning the install several times. Tried install with disk encryption disabled (was encrypted) - no luck. Reencrypted disk and tried again after resetting SMC which *did* seem to make a difference.
MY EXPERIENCE:
Two days of struggling, tried many things such as
- 2 hours phone call with Apple Support (without result)
- 7 times download 5GB file
- deactivate firewall
- reset PRAM
- reset SMC
- turn on VPN, turn off VPN
- DNS change
- Create new Test User on my mac
- Removing files from library
FINALLY INSTALLED. WHAT I DID?
Just download Mac Os via LAN cable. After download, MacOS Mojave pop up will appear.
Close it
Restart
Go to Application and install it.
Now it works.
Thats the shame Apple Inc. and Apple Guys.
I also have the same problem, on an iMac Pro. Tried both ways to reset the SMC, didn't help. Tried safe mode install, clean admin user install, several downloads, etc, no change in behavior.
My install log seems to contain an error message that I haven't seen in other logs users have posted:
Failed to retrieve linkfile:///Applications/Install%20macOS%20Mojave.app/Contents/SharedSupport/In stallESD.dmg
The file it's looking for: /Applications/Install macOS Mojave.app/Contents/SharedSupport/InstallESD.dmg is in fact present there at that location. Maybe the encoding screwed it up or something. Here's a larger snippet from my install log:

I did all solutions proposed on the different replies.
the solution that worked was this one:
delete wifi downloaded Mojave installer.
download it again on ethernet connection.
once downloaded, installer starts automatically, so I keep connected my Macbook pro 2018 on ethernet, basically to not touch anything during the installation, and it worked on the first try.
I think that was the reason to success. installer must download some data during installation, and somehow, it doesn't work on wifi. this is only a supposition of myself, of course, trying to explain this fenomena .
so KEEP THE MACBOO CONNECTED ON ETHERNET DURING THE INSTALATION.

I was able to solve it by setting Secure Boot to No Security.

After successfully installing Mojave, I turned Secure Boot back on.

I was able to get the installer to complete (got past the 15 seconds remaining prompt), and it appears to be working.
Here’s what I did to get it going:
I turned off my VPN, and set it so that it did not start on login.
I then reset my network config so that I had zero boxes checked in the proxy menu.
I then shut down, and reset my SMC.
Finally, I downloaded a new copy of the installer from the App Store, and ran it.
If I had to guess, I’d say that the installer doesn’t play nice with any VPN software, and an SMC reset is required thanks to the T2 chip.
