My mid-2010 iMac runs a 2.8 GHz Intel Core i5 and has 4GB of memory. It was upgraded to a 1TB SSD awhile back, and is running High Sierra without any glitches. Yet I cannot upgrade now to Mojave. Is this because of my serial number showing mid-2010?

iMac, macOS High Sierra (10.13.6)

No. Upgrade eligibility is not determined by serial number. It is determined by the Mac's model designation, and Mojave requires one of those specified under Check compatibility in How to upgrade to macOS Mojave - Apple Support.
