Why Discontinue the iPhone SE Line?

I would love to understand the rationale behind this move.

I get it, only about 10% of Americans prefer the SE over the other iPhone options, but the SE has a huge following overseas. India alone has a population more than triple that of the USA, and the SE sells in high numbers there. Additionally, if you travel a lot, you'll notice much of the world has yet to transition to smart phones in mass. Push key and flip phones are alive and well throughout the globe, and I can't imagine people who use those phones are going to transition anytime soon to an iPhone 7 which starts at $450 and has little performance benefit over the SE.

An iPhone SE2 starting at a $300-ish price point seems like such a logical move. It would attain a massive global market share (or at least ensure Apple doesn't lose a big market share when the SE goes into obsolete status). I have to assume there are some numbers the Apple folks are looking at that tell them this is a smart move, but I cannot imagine what those numbers might be. I'd would really appreciate if an Apple representative could answer this question for the benefit of those of us who really enjoy this product line.

Or maybe I'm just frustrated because I like to carry my phone in my pocket and those days are coming to an end....
