where is the clipboard and how do you access it?

The clipboard is where things are temporarily saved such as when you copy when doing copy and then paste (when in a word processing document for example). Typically I only view the contents by pasting them into some destination but you can also view clipboard contents by using the Finder Edit menu item Show Clipboard.
